Support for all children

Every child and young person deserves the chance to communicate with confidence - to express themselves, connect with others, and be understood.

Every child and young person deserves the chance to communicate with confidence - to express themselves, connect with others, and be understood.

At Inner West Paediatrics, our speech pathologists support children from preschoolers to teens to develop their communication, language, and social interaction skills. Some children just need a little extra help to keep up with learning or friendships, while others may have developmental delays, disabilities, or be neurodivergent. Whatever your child’s needs, we’re here to help.

Our experienced team works with children and adolescents with a wide range of communication profiles and diagnoses, including autism, ADHD, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, social-emotional differences, trauma, and behavioural differences.

We focus on each child’s strengths and goals - helping them build skills for learning, friendships, and everyday communication so they can participate fully at home, at school, and in the community.

FAQs

What happens during a therapy session?
+
-

Each therapy session is different and tailored to your child’s individual needs. Your therapist will first speak with you or the important people in the child's life to discuss their priorities, strengths and support needs. Based on this information, a tailored plan will be developed which may include standardised and non-standardised assessment, observations across natural settings, collaborating with other professionals already involved with the child and all will be summarised in a report with recommendations provided.

Following this assessment process, the therapist and family will identify and document goals that are meaningful to them, and will guide therapy.

How long does a session last?
+
-

A single speech pathology session will last approx. 70 minutes, including a session summary and email to the family.

Do I need a referral?
+
-

Not at all. We welcome referrals from health and education professionals, but no referral is needed to see our therapists. Simply contact us to book an appointment. If you are eligible for a Medicare rebate then you should speak with your General Practitioner regarding a referral to support this.

How do I know my child needs speech therapy?
+
-

Speech Pathology can help with a wide range of issues, including difficulty speaking clearly, stuttering, difficulty understanding or using language and difficulty with social communication.
To accurately assess your child’s need for speech pathology, our team will organise an initial assessment with your child and their family before progressing.

How much does a session cost?
+
-

The cost of our speech pathology sessions are billed in line with the current rates set out by the NDIS at $193.99 per hour. Please contact our helpful team for a complete price guide including other services provided at Inner West Paediatrics.

Is there a waitlist?
+

The 5 key reasons why you should consider occupational therapy for your child

Improve speech clarity
Speech pathology can help your child speak more clearly and be understood more easily by others.

Enhance language skills and access total communication
Speech pathology can help your child improve their language skills, such as vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension. Language skills are not always spoken, and it is important that not-speaking individuals have access to a language system that works for them. Speech pathology can help with this by supporting trials of different AAC devices to find the right fit.

Increase fluency
Speech pathology can help your child overcome stuttering or other fluency disorders.

Enhance social communication
Speech pathology can help your child improve their ability to understand and use nonverbal communication, such as facial expressions and body language.

Boost self-confidence
Speech pathology can help your child feel more confident in their ability to communicate effectively, which can have a positive impact on their overall self-esteem.
