At Inner West Paediatrics, we understand that every child is unique — and so are their therapy needs. Whether your child is working on communication, motor skills, social interaction, or emotional regulation, one common question we hear from families is:
“Should my child attend individual therapy or join a group program?”
The answer isn’t always simple — both settings offer valuable benefits. Here's a breakdown of how each approach supports your child’s development, and how to decide which might be the right fit.
Individual Therapy: One-on-One Support
What it is
Individual therapy involves a child and their family working one-on-one with a therapist. Sessions are highly tailored to your child’s needs, goals, and interests.
Best for children who
- Need focused support in a specific skill area
- Have high levels of sensory, emotional or behavioural needs
- Are not yet ready to engage with peers
- Thrive in a quieter, structured environment
Benefits of Individual Therapy
- Personalised strategies and goal-setting
- Flexibility to adapt activities moment-to-moment
- Direct coaching for families and caregivers
- Great for building foundational skills before transitioning to group work
Group Therapy: Learning with Peers
What it is
Group therapy brings children together in a safe, neuro-affirming environment to learn through play, shared experiences, peer interaction or who have similar goals. At Inner West Paediatrics, our group programs are run by experienced therapists and designed with clear goals in mind.
Best for children who
- Are seeking opportunities to engage with peers
- Learn best through shared play and modelling
- Would benefit from practising communication or regulation with others
- Are transitioning to school or other community settings
Benefits of Group Therapy
- Opportunities for peer interaction and friendship-building
- Practise real-world skills in a supported setting
- Build confidence, self-advocacy, and turn-taking
- Helps children generalise skills beyond 1:1 therapy

Social Pairings at Inner West Paediatrics
In addition to our larger group programs, we also offer social pairings — a customised approach where your child is thoughtfully matched with a peer who shares similar interests and social goals. Before pairing, we take the time to learn about your child’s strengths, needs, and passions — whether that’s Minecraft, animals, sport, or art — and connect them with a like-minded peer. These pairings allow children to build confidence in a smaller setting and practise key social communication skills in a natural, motivating way.
